WHERE TO START Here are some guidelines for working on the excisting texture packages, though the explanations are ment for the URP project in specific, they are also very usefull for anyone that does make textures for Unreal as well, either normal textures or S3TC textures. So how to start ? Lets first take a look at a package. Packages like DecayedS, PlayrShp, Queen, Mine are built out of several groups, there is a reason for this. Of course it does come in handy while building a map, but it seems there is also a relation on how the packages have been setup. If you go work on a package, and that package does contain a group called Base, than this should be the first group to complete before going ahead with any other group(s). In general most other textures in the package are variations on the Base textures.
Below shows oné Base texture and the
3 variations on that texture, the last one is an anination to show that
they all are basically the same texture. If you focus on one noticable
spot in the animation, you will see that, that spot keeps being visible
in all variations.
The above textures are from the Mine package.
Below here is another example, in this case the second texture (Bstl23c1) is simply a color variation from first texture (Bstl23c), the background in the Lights only differs because some vertical shadow has been added. And than it looks like if the background is made out of five vertical blocks of basalt.
Below is an follow up on the textures above, with Bstl23c as base and creating some vertical shadow, than add the vGirsder1 on the top and bottom over the background, than add the light to it, and voila there is the Bstl23c texture.
The last 2 groups of texture above originate from the PlayrShp package.
This is only to point out, that it is very important to start with all the Base textures before you go ahead with other textures in that same package. If the package does not contain a Base group, than it is still a very smart idea to go through the texture database to make sure the Base texture is not to be found in another package, this too happens. And its not called for nothing; Base group, therefore make it the Base of your work !
